Since its formation - over 60 years ago - the Filmstudio has witnessed ups and downs of the cinema industry. It has seen times, in which there were three student cinemas in Aachen, as well as times, in which the Filmstudio was the only cinema in all of Aachen. Today, it is the oldest of Aachen's cinemas in operator's hands, and the last non-commercial cinema in Aachen.
The AStA organizes irregular movie screenings in the auditorium, in the main building of the RWTH Aachen.
16th May 1956
The official founding date. The so-called "stud-film" - Studentisches Filmstudio an der RWTH Aachen - is formed by members of the AStA.
The Filmstudio releases its first own program: Weekly changing movies are shown twice a week.
The first in-house production - "Nocturno" is shot and produced.
17th April 1967
The "Filmstudio an der RWTH Aachen" is now a registered association (no. VR 1302 in the register of associations).
For the first time, the entire semester program is advertised on one poster. This advertising concept has remained unchainged up to this day.
For the first time, the Filmstudio shows the old German classic "Die Feuerzangenbowle" - creating a tradition that continues to this day.
The Filmstudio orders a short film subscription from the short film agency in Hamburg (Kurzfilmagentur Hamburg). Since then, a short film is shown before every regular movie.
Due to renovations in the auditorium of the main building, the planned festivities in honor of the Filmstudio's 50th anniverary have to be resceduled.

After 60 years of analogue film technology, the Filmstudio switches to digital technology. The new 4K projector by the company Christie, as well as new speakers, create an entirely new cinematic experience! "The Wolf of Wall Street" is shown as the opening film.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Filmstudio temporarily closes its doors in spring. Films are shown for a few weeks in the fall under strict hygiene regulations. Due to the urgency of the circumstances, even the Filmstudio is now being accelerated into the 21st century in terms of digitalization: ticket pre-sale is now taking place in the new online ticket store.
After a long covid break, the Filmstudio finally resumes regular cinema operations in fall 2021. Furthermore, the Filmstudio's 65th anniversary is celebrated in style: The first Filmstudio Special Week takes place and the first Filmstudio Pubquiz is well received.
